Laser-Mirror Magnetometer
This project is probably the most simple magnetometer ever.
If you use a soda bottle (see links below), just remove the paper and cut it at the upper 1/3.
Glue the magnet and the small mirror onto the cardboard - glue the soda straw onto the magnet.
Fill some sand (or finer gravel) into the bottle for stability - you don't want to disturb
your measurement just because you're walking by!
Suspend the 'compass' on the top of the housing (or soda bottle) - we're almost done.
Now we need to mount the laser-pointer and adjust everything so, that the laser is projected
over the small mirror onto a nearby wall. Suspend a scale (i.e. ruler) on the wall - now the
laser beam should be projected onto the scale. So long as the Earth's magnetic field remains
constant the magnet remains stationary, but if the field changes, the angle of the mirror will
change and therefore the laser will be deflected different.
